Standard 1.1c - Level 1
Using concrete materials, demonstrate the meaning of halves, thirds, and fourths of sets and wholes.
Standard in Kid Friendly Language
Students will look at a picture and name it as 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4.
Standard Unwrapped
KNOW Students will know fractional name for a shaded/unshaded area of a whole.
ABLE TO DO Student will be able to recognize parts of a whole (1/2, 1/3, 1/4).
Students will be able to demonstrate how to divide a whole into these various parts.
Instructional Strategies
- Teacher will give students time to practice the use of fractions using drawings, pattern block templates, and other manipulatives.

Projects and Activities
- LCD projector
- A projector can be used in the classroom, while students are giving input on slates and other written documents, to demonstrate visual representations of fractions. Student desks can be arranged in a horseshoe shape with the teacher/projector in the middle. This format allows the teacher to see every student and briefly assess the answers they produce on the dry-erase slate.
Strategies for Special Needs Students
- This can be used to practice any skill on the overhead projector! "Grabbers"-Using transparency with fractions, or any content students need to learn, students place their grabber on the screen over the information you are asking them to know. Grabbers are made by cutting various shapes from neon colored cardboard. When they place the grabber on the overhead it looks as though the information has been highlighted. Have the student walk toward you with the grabber. As he gets closer, the information grows (gets larger).
