First 4 Weeks

Content and Essential Skills


Students will be challenged to build a tower out of one piece of typing paper 81/2 by 11.

The tower must be free standing for a ten second count.

The paper can be folded, rolled, or cut and pasted using a glue stick.

5. Practice using tools safely


Skills


Students will need to decide what makes structures strong.

Students will need to brainstorm within the three person team to come up with the best design for the tower.

Students will be able to make several prototypes during the unit.

1. Students will be able to pass a safety test with a 100%.

2. Students will be able to use the shop power and hand tools safely.

3. Students will be able to demonstrate the correct way to use power tools while being observed.


Assessment


Minimum height to be graded is 30 inches.

Any team that breaks the school record of 751/2 inches will receive 100% and the traveling paper tower trophy!

1. Shop safety test.

2. Practical use observation by teacher.

Second 4 Weeks

Content and Essential Skills


A. Students will form design teams to design and build a prototype of a fire lookout tower that is at least 14" tall and have a platform on top 2inches by 4inches.

Students are limited by the materials given.

B. Student will be put into design groups of three to four students. They will need to complete a part of the maze that is assigned to them. There are eight 2' by 2' squares on the board. The object is to keep the golf ball rolling thru the maze without stopping.

Assessment


A.(Strength test using a structural stress analyzer.)

Students will receive a class grade based on how many times in a row the maze works.

Students will receive an individual grade based on originality of square.


Resources


Time to Crush worksheet. (Craton)

Students will have access to tools in the wood/metal shop.

Students can bring materials from home or use building materials found in the tech lab or shop.

October

Content and Essential Skills


Students will be working in tech lab for the remainder of the quarter.

Students will be required to produce 5 portfolios before the end of the quarter.


Skills


The 7th graders in tech 1 will do portfolios on the following labs.

1. Super Paint

2. Meet the Mighty Mechanisms

3. Modeling the Mean Machines.

4. See Through Machines

5. Car Builder.

All of these labs are basic computer programs or building systems like Legos Dacta.
