Standard 1: Listening

English Language Learners listen for information and understanding, using a variety of sources, for academic and social purposes.

1. Understand key words, phrases, and simple sentences. (Essential Skills

2. Respond with short answers or non-verbally to greetings and requests in 1:1/group situations.

3. Respond nonverbally to show comprehension of stories, information, and academic content(pointing, matching, drawing, and gesturing).

4. Follow clear multiple step directions in 1:1 and group situations.

5. Listen for specific purposes, main ideas, and details.

6. Hear and discriminate among a number of phonemes and patterns of sound specific to the English language.

Standard 2: Speaking

English Language Learners speak to convey information and understanding, using a variety of sources, for academic and social purposes.

1. State basic personal information and preferences. ES

2. Respond to simple questions related to immediate context with single words, phrases, e.g.: yes/open, either/or, basic personal information. ES

3. Ask questions to obtain and clarify information using singe words and phrases. ES

4. Make simple presentations in small groups using single words and phrases and visual support.

5. Restate information from social and academic settings using single words and phrases.

6. Use both social and academic learned vocabulary in context during basic conversations and to communicate needs in social and academic settings.

Standard 3: Reading

English Language Learners read for information and understanding, using a variety of sources, for academic and social purposes.


1. Identify and use reading strategies to make text comprehensible and meaningful, e.g.: graphic organizers, text features, resource

  materials. ES 


2. Recognize and interpret information from academic content sources, e.g.: graphs, maps, graphic organizers, diagrams. ES

3. Recognize, decode, and pronounce high frequency words.

4. Identify elements of story, main ideas, details, and sequence of events from modified/visually-supported text using non-verbal or one- or two- word phrases. ES

5. Apply reading skills from first language to recognize and comprehend various text structures and print conventions from multiple sources.

6. Follow simple written directions in context; schedules, calendars.

Standard 4: Writing

English Language Learners write to convey information and understanding, using a variety of sources, for academic and social purposes.

1. Write simple sentences and phrases using a model. ES

2. Write a short personal narrative using simple sentences. ES

3. Record and organize content area information using graphic organizers. ES

4. Complete forms such as job applications by providing basic personal information with assistance. ES

5. Plan writing using outlines, class and research notes, maps, and time lines.

6. Format written work appropriately, e.g.: margins, dates, and indenting.
