  • prefixes/suffixes
  • synonyms/antonyms
  • context clues
  • inferencing

ABLE TO DO

  • identify unknown words
  • use prefixes/suffixes to "break apart" words for understanding
  • find synonyms or antonyms in the text for the unknown word
  • use punctuation to identify defining or explaining phrases
  • make inferences using words/phrases from the text and background knowledge
