Reader uses the text around unknown words to understand new vocabulary.

- prefixes/suffixes
- synonyms/antonyms
- context clues
- inferencing
ABLE TO DO
- identify unknown words
- use prefixes/suffixes to "break apart" words for understanding
- find synonyms or antonyms in the text for the unknown word
- use punctuation to identify defining or explaining phrases
- make inferences using words/phrases from the text and background knowledge
