First Semester

Unit - Line


Standards


2. Students know and apply the ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN,and the sensory expressive features of visual arts.

KFL-Students learn to Structure the elements and principles of design to communicate feelings.

Objective: Students learn to accurately see and copy edge lines. Students learn the expressive range of line quality.


Enduring Understanding


Students will learn to identify edges and draw them acurrately. This is a crucial first step in developing drawing skill.

Students will learn how to identify significant edges from a reference.

Students will learn how line quality affects the the feeling expressed by a drawing.

Students will learn to observe a reference, identify a significant edge, and accurately reproduce the line in a drawing.

Pre instruction drawing, sketchbook execises, line drawing project.


Learning Experiences


Exercises- Upsidedown drawing, picture plane drawing, grid drawing, Block out drawing

Sketchbook- Blind countour, gesture, Repeated line, light drawing (picture, signature, abstract.)


Elements and Principles of Design Menu


Shape- geometric and organic compositions, collage portrait, logo design, font design, B&W drawing, negative drawing, Xerox collage portrait,music to shape.

Value- seurat contrast study, gradients, value scale, abstract value composition, geometric solids, rings of value, referenced value drawing.

Texture- pencil texture studies, still life with contrasting textures, hair drawing, drapery, metal, fur.

Space formal perspective- Name, imaginary buildings, cityscape.1,2,3,4 point perspective.

Space informal perspective- Atmospheric, overlap, size, placement.

Sketchbook Exercises

Contour- Blind, continuous.

Gesture- 30 second, action lines, mass.

Framework- skeletons

Shading- gradients, solids.

Grids- referenced drawings

Research Project

presentation- Students will research and report on the social historical context of a work of art.

Per Semester

6 elements and principles projects.

1 research project.

1 project mounted and ready for display.

1 sketchbook filled with exercises, diagrams, notes, and inspiration.


Second Semester

Elements and Principles of Design Menu

Balance- collect examples, diagram types, photograph natural examples, analyze artworks.

Movement- leading lines,implied lines, S curves, diagonals, horizontals, verticals, gravity, analyze artwork.

Rhythm- regular, irregular, color, analyze artwork.

Contrast- comparison chart, value contrast(high, analogous,low), analyze artwork.

Emphasis- 9 square grid, color, value, size, contrast.

Unity- repeated elements, color, texture, quality, value, implied lines, implied shapes,

Sketchbook Exercises

Contour- Blind, continuous, silhouette.

Gesture- 30 second, action lines, mass.

Framework- skeletons, solids, different points of view.

Doodling- lines, shapes, solids, buildings, Escher tilling, letters, faces, bodies, shading.

Shading- gradients, solids, organic forms.

Grids- referenced drawings

Cartoons- Building a vocabulary of features, analyzing characters.


Research Project

presentation- Students will research and report on the social historical context of a work of art.
